This is not an easy place to reach, even with your own
transport, but the journey is attractive, and lets you indulge in the
illusion that you have just discovered ancient Pinara yourself.
Very little is known about the place, except that it was
an important Lycian city that minted its own coins. The most compelling
spectacle is the openings cut into the huge mass of rock that towers above
the site. They are thought to be tombs, but access is impossible to all but
dedicated rock climbers.
There are other tombs at ground level and the most
interesting of these, the Royal Tomb, displays fine reliefs showing people
and walled settlements. Of the other ruins, the theatre is best preserved.
From Kalkan take the N-400 towards Fethiye for about
40km, taking a turn-off for 3km through Minare village, then a 30 minute
walk. |
