Ancient Tlos was one of the more important Lycian cities,
and in the 19th century it became a winter headquarters for a pirate called
Kanli Ali Ağa.
The ruins reflect this mixed parentage. The empty remains
of the pirate's fortress tower over the site from the top of the acropolis,
and the Lycian remains include rock-cut tombs.
If the attendant is around, ask for help in locating the
best-preserved one, which has an Ionic temple facade and a relief of
Bellerophon riding the winged horse, Pegasus.
The theatre is also in good
condition, but the baths are the most interesting of the other scattered
remains.
Tlos is 48km north of Xanthos at the village of Kale Asar. |
